Do you notice that you almost stop breathing when your mind is racing? Research has shown that people on their smartphones tend to have shallow breathing... In our tech-obsessed culture, we must develop more self-awareness for a fulfilled life and it starts with the breath. When we breathe deeply and fully, we live deeply and fully.
Do you feel ill when you don't get enough sleep or sleep during the 'wrong' hours? In certain sleep phases, deep relaxation occurs as our body regulates the breath to reboot our systems. Honouring circadian rhythms eliminates stress within.
As human beings, we all desire to live our lives to our best potential. Just like a flower which yearns to blossom in the heart of spring and display its best colours and nectar, our satisfaction in life can only come when we are mindful of our bodies and breath as a tool to get to know ourselves better.
By breathing in and out as if the air was delicious and we were savouring the best, we detoxify, allowing for us to lose the unhealthy weight from too much sitting. We also circulate more nutrients and oxygen to our cells and capillaries for more vitality and brainpower. We become more in charge of our thoughts and emotions. We tune in to our body's signals and needs. Our bodies are intelligent and work all the time to serve us. By listening to its innate ancient wisdom, we can banish overeating, burnout and pain.
So take a moment to recognize your breath pattern. Switch to smooth, regular breathing whenever you catch yourself off-rhythm. If you have a meditation practice, or are developing one, start by noticing the breath.
In yoga, pranayama is central to steadying the fluctuations of our mind. By practising prescribed patterns, we get to understand and control our ego-centric mind and connect to our heart. By breathing into our lower belly, heart, ribs and collar bones, we are expanded to our full capacity. By forcing our exhales and allowing the inhale to come naturally, we eliminate what we don't need. By inhaling for 4 counts, holding for 6 and exhaling for 8, we give more than we receive and create a 'gap' for contemplation. When dealing with negativity, exhale fully and hold for as long as it is comfortable- let go of what doesn't serve you anymore.
Witness the changes for yourself.
